In the world, the term "Java" by itself is, in general, slang for coffee. Java is also the name of the largest island in the Indonesian archipelago. The Dutch began cultivation of coffee trees on the island of Java in the 17th century and it has been exported globally since. Javas coffee production is centered on the Ijen Plateau, at the eastern end of Java, at an altitude of more than 1,400 meters. The coffee is primarily grown on large estates that were built by the Dutch.
Arabica is a species of coffee originally indigenous to the mountains of Yemen in the Arabian Peninsula, hence its name, and also from the southwestern highlands of Ethiopia and southeastern Sudan. It is also known as the "coffee shrub of Arabia", "mountain coffee" or "arabica coffee". Arabica is believed to be the first species of coffee to be cultivated, being grown in southwest Arabia for well over 1,000 years. It is a superior coffee to Robusta, the other major commercially grown coffee species.
